Huelgoat has two supermarkets, several small traditional shops and variety of restaurants. The town is centred around a large lake and there are numerous, well signed woodland and river walks.
Small canals run from the lake for several miles through the forest. These were constructed for the old lead and silver mines, remains of which can still be seen.
Our nearest larger town, about twenty minutes away, is Carhaix-Plouguer which has three supermarkets and can provide most of the shopping you are likely to need. There are more walks along the Nantes-Brest canal which runs nearby. The area has numerous restaurants and cafes and you will find that eating out is very reasonably priced, particularly at lunchtime if you opt for the inclusive fixed price menus, and the food is of a good standard. Morlaix to the north and Quimper to the south, both about forty five minutes drive are towns well worth exploring.
The region is part of the Parc Naturel Regional d'Armorique which encompasses the Monts d'Arree, the River Aulne and its estuary, the Crozon Peninsula and miles of coastline and islands. We are sure you will not be disappointed with the varied and unspoilt landscapes. The North, South and West coasts of Finistère are all within an hours drive.
